Santa Monica Swim Center Turns 10 Years Old

Swimming in Santa Monica doesn’t require a trip to the beach. Residents of Olympic Studios, Olympic Studio Lofts and other NMS-owned Santa Monica apartments can take advantage of an even closer aquatic destination: the Santa Monica Swim Center.

Located on the campus of Santa Monica College, at the intersection of Pico Boulevard and 16th Street, the Swim Center is open to the public. For Santa Monica residents, the daily entry fee is only $3.25 for adults, $1.25 for children, $1.50 for seniors and $1.50 for students. (Go here for more information pertaining to Community Aquatics Program fees.)

This year is a special one for the the Santa Monica Swim Center, as it has been celebrating its 10th anniversary in July. Since opening, the center has welcomed Olympians Michael Phelps, Janet Evans, Ian Crocker and Lenny Krayzelburg; it has also been recognized by Los Angeles Magazine as the Best Swimming Pool in L.A.

The center has two pools: an Olympic-size fitness pool and a splash pool for kids. The Santa Monica Swim Center lifeguards who have won the top prize at the Southern California Public Pool Operators Association’s annual competition each year since 2008 are always on duty.

If you’re just learning about the Santa Monica Swim Center, it’s good timing: On August 1, Santa Monica resident registrations starts for its fall classes. For more information, go to the City of Santa Monica’s RecEnroll site. Be aware that you will have to provide proof of your Santa Monica residency, through a government-issued ID as well as a current utility bill or rental agreement.
