Santa Monica Playhouse Launches ‘Free Festival of Theatre’

If you live at [email protected], 1422 on 6th, [email protected] or other NMS-owned apartments in downtown Santa Monica, you may not know that a highly regarded, 52-year-old community theater is right around the corner. With an 11-day free festival of theatrical performances starting this weekend, it’s an opportune time to get introduced to the Santa Monica Playhouse.

The “All-Join-In Free Festival of Theatre” begins Saturday and runs through August 22 at the Santa Monica Playhouse, which is located at 1211 Fourth St. The festival is part of a three-year celebration surrounding the 50th anniversary of the playhouse.

Free performances of the family-friendly “Dorothy’s Adventures in Oz” will be staged Saturdays at 3 p.m. and Sundays at 12:30 p.m. this weekend and the following weekend. Additionally, performances of the romantic-comedy musical “Moliere’s ‘The Fools’ ” will take place on the Santa Monica Playhouse’s Main Stage on August 18 at 7:30 p.m. and an hour earlier the following day.

Festival celebrations also include free public theater workshops for all ages, as well as an Enchanted Fairytale Interactive Theatre Adventure for kids and grownups.
