Relocating to Santa Monica, CA – How to Find the Best Apartment, and What to Expect

So you’ve got that new job offer, internship, start-up, or college career awaiting you in or near Santa Monica, California? The first step is now to find a suitable place to live — and everyone knows that the rental market in Los Angeles is often known as one of the most robust in the nation. We’ve compiled some helpful information to get you going.

1. Determine which part of Santa Monica that you’d want to live in.

Santa Monica is not a huge city by any means, but it certainly does have a vastly different feel, depending on which area you choose to live in. Downtown Santa Monica is often the first preference of most newcomers, due to it’s close proximity to the Santa Monica Pier, the beach, and of course the Third Street Promenade. Many moving to Santa Monica for work will also find that living Downtown will enable them to walk just steps from their apartment to their office or nearest co-working space. Walking just a few steps to multiple grocery stores and dining options make Downtown an incredibly pedestrian-friendly place to live.

NMS resident, Terra Andersen, has found it surprising as to how little her need for a car in Santa Monica really was after she moved to Santa Monica last year. “I had heard from many different people that I would not be needing a car for much, but I had never lived in an area where literally everything was within such a short walking distance. I ended up selling one of my two vehicles, and I rarely need to leave the area for anything.”

Additional neighborhoods to consider living in are Mid-Town, Ocean Ave., Ocean Park, North of Wilshire, North of Montana, Pico District, and Pacific Palisades.

2. Determine your budget and what you can qualify for.

Each property management company will have it’s own rules as to how much income you will need to make to qualify for one of their rentals. Additionally, you may qualify for affordable housing rentals if you meet income criteria that is set forth by the City of Santa Monica. If you have roommates, be sure to communicate and agree upon rental amounts that you both are comfortable paying each month.

3. Schedule tours at multiple properties.

It is always a good idea to take a look at more than one option if you have found additional rentals that meet your criteria. Fortunately, NMS’s Santa Monica Leasing Gallery offers a one-stop-shop to more than six different apartment buildings. Simply call, provide the number of bedrooms and bathrooms that you are looking for, and they will take it from there! You’ll be scheduled in for a personal tour with one of our leasing consultants who will show you the many options that await you.
