Los Angeles Labor Day Activities

Even though for some the beginning of September signals the end of lazy days, beach trips, and fruity drinks by the pool, not all the fun is over. These Los Angeles Labor Day weekend events will turn end-of-summer blues into celebrations. African Marketplace

African Marketplace celebrates the arts, culture and influence of African people though dance, music, visual art, food and literature. For 25 years, this annual cultural experience at Rancho Cienega Recreation Center has celebrated the sites sounds, tastes and crafts of the African Diaspora. 

The Taste Of Beverly Hills
Sept. 25

Gourmet food fans should head to Beverly Hills for Food & Winemagazine’s first-ever Taste of Beverly Hills. This four-day event promises to satisfy those looking for a big culinary adventure, and includes the talents of local celeb chefs like Michael Voltaggio, Walter Manzke and Ludo Lefebvre. The weekend begins with a picnic under the stars and drinks made by some of the cities top mixologists. The festivities continue with chefs, sommeliers, cooking competitions, music, a special Sunday brunch and a pie contest.

Earth, Wind & Fire(works) at the Hollywood Bowl

No place in Los Angeles celebrates summer better than a night at the Hollywood Bowl, and a colorful pyrotechnics show is sure to make the season go out with a bang. The Sweet & Hot Music Festival

Located at the Los Angeles Airport Marriott hotel, The Sweet & Hot Music Festivalshowcases the golden age of American popular music. For this five-day music festival, musicians gather to share the sounds of ragtime, blues, jazz, show tunes, big band and more.


Fiesta Hermosa

Each year, more than 270 artists and crafters participate in this giant community event that also features live music, cool ocean breezes and a beer garden featuring local microbrews. 

Leimert Park Village African Art & Music FestivalÂ

In its second year, the festival will feature the art of Charles Bibbs and Sylvia Rundles and a musical tribute to the 50th anniversary of Motown. This free event includes a fashion show, activities for kids, a juried arts & crafts show, an international food court and music all weekend.


Los Angeles Times Celebration of Food & Wine
Sept. 5

This Labor Day weekend, Paramount Pictures Studio will be the site of the first Los Angeles Times Celebration of Food & Wine. Not only will this event feature celebrated chefs and some of the best œmom & pop kitchens from around Los Angeles, but indie music favorites Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward of She & Him will perform a full set. The one-day event goes from noon till 8 p.m. Concert-only tickets are available for people who want to come at 5 p.m just for the music.


Conquer the Bridge Labor Day Run
Sept. 6
Claiming “all roads lead to San Pedro” this Labor Day, participants will run a five-mile course through San Pedro, including two trips over the picturesque Vincent Thomas Bridge, in the Conquer the Bridge Labor Day Run. It will be the first time a race has been allowed on the bridge in a decade, and fleet-footed residents are ready to celebrate.

Boddy’s Big Backyard
Sept. 6
Enjoy Descanso Gardens in the style of the estate’s founder, E. Manchester Boddy, with a garden walk, children’s story time, live music and barbecue. The event is free with admission to Descanso Gardens, which encompasses 150 gorgeous acres of horticultural gems.

Target Free Holidays at LACMA
Sept. 6
Visitors of all ages are invited to a free day at the museum. On Labor Day the Los Angeles County Museum of Art will be open from noon to 8 p.m. It will be a great opportunity to see the John Baldessari exhibit “Pure Beauty” and the “Fallen Fruit Presents The Fruit of LACMA” exhibition as well as a free performance.
