Reality Check: Don’t Forget What Memorial Day is Really About

While Memorial Day may conjure up images of backyard BBQ’s and sleeping in come Monday for some, those in the United States armed forces have very different images of what Memorial Day really means.  Regardless of your beliefs, out of respect for the brave men and women who have served our country, let’s take a moment to remember what Memorial Day is really about.

Memorial Day is, yes, a federal holiday, but it is for remembering those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and died while in service, unlike Veterans Day which is a day to remember and thank all of the men and women who have served in the U.S. military.

The origins of Memorial Day date back to post American Civil War when it was known as Decoration Day.  By the 20th Century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all of the brave and selfless Americans who have served in the military service.

So regardless of how you are spending your Memorial Day and extended weekend, be sure to take a moment and think of the countless Americans who have passed away while keeping our great country safe!
