3 Spots to Watch Live Music in Santa Monica

If you live on the Westside and are a big fan of live music but aren’t in the mood to make the trek into Hollywood, a mecca for live musical performances, here are three cool spots in Santa Monica with great live music shows.  Check them out!

2101 Lincoln Blvd.
Santa Monica, CA 90405

If you’re a fan of the groovier side of the Mad Men era, take a trip (pun intended) down Lincoln Boulevard to Trip! While this bar and venue has gone through a few renovations, it still retains it’s far out atmosphere from when it originally opened decades ago.  You’ll find an eclectic mix of live folk, rock, bluegrass and more every day of the week with some burlesque, trivia and comedy acts sprinkled in for good measure. Best of  all? There is rarely a cover to attend their shows, but be sure to check their calendar because some require the occasional, and reasonable, $5 cover.

Harvelle’s Santa Monica
1432 4th Street
Santa Monica, CA 90401

With the massive amount of turn-around for entertainment venue’s in Santa Monica, it’s a wonder that this establishment, which opened in 1931, has survived the Great Depression, World War 2 and all of the demolition and gentrification surrounding it.  Still, Harvelle’s has remained the top spot in downtown Santa Monica for live musical entertainment.  While the venue used to primarily host jazz and blues acts, you can now catch a variety of performances throughout the week, including indie, r&b and reggae.  Cover varies-be sure to check their website for details about each show.

1301 5th Street
Santa Monica, CA 90401

Chances are that if you’ve ever walked around downtown Santa Monica towards the promenade, you’ve walked past this venue and wondered what lay behind its dark  and mysterious exterior. Wonder no more!  Zanzibar is downtown Santa Monica’s go-to spot for dancing to DJ’ed and at times, live music.  Live acts range from world music to afro-beat and funk with no cover before 10:00 pm and a $5 or $10 cover thereafter.
